In Sir Walter Scott's 'Fair Maid of Perth', the heroine Catharine Glover is tricked into taking refuge in Falkland Castle to escape the attentions of the Duke of Rothsay, the heir to the Scottish throne. A further stratagem brings the Duke to the Castle where he is murdered by his dismissed Master of the Horse, Sir John Ramorny. Scott's Journal for 27 June 1829 records a visit to the 'most interesting remains' of Falkland Palace.
