In 1657 he went to Leiden to study medicine, anatomy and botany. That same year he travelled to Paris where he studied the hospitals. He graduated Doctor of Medicine at a small French university. On his return to Holland Harvey was made a fellow of the College of Physicians at the Hague. He was made doctor-general to the king's army in Flanders after the Restoration, and in about 1675 he was made physician to Charles II.
